Inspired by the lines of the London Underground Map, this beautiful wooden clock celebrates an iconic design. (Just don’t try to navigate by it…)
Harry Beck is an all-time design hero - millions of commuters should give thanks daily for his vision. Let’s celebrate the genius of the London Underground map.
Draughtsman Harry realised the map didn’t need to be topographical and created the abstract version. I’m fascinated by the overlapping lines, the ordering of complexity, the shapes of negative space.
A clock seemed appropriate for a railway map. I laser cut walnut, maple and cherry to imitate the different tube line colours, with stations highlighted in white.
And no, I’ve never sailed past my stop while gazing in awe at a tube map…
W420mm x H300mm// 3mm Laser Grade Plywood// 3mm Walnut, Cherry and Maple veneer// 0.8mm Acrylic// Laser Cut//
The clock comes fitted with a Quartz clock mechanism that uses a single AA battery (not provided). The hands are Quartz 100mm white baton metal hands, fitted with brass fixtures.
*PLEASE NOTE* each piece will be different because no two pieces of wood have the same grain and therefore each will engrave slightly differently, producing differential tones.
